Abstract—Given the reliance on remote teams, understanding the cultural challenges in computer-mediated environments is increasingly important to support practices with interventions that enable remote teams to function more effectively and efficiently. In this study, we analyzed cultural awareness in teams that are ethnically and language diverse in relation to team performance. Moreover, we examined the effect of cultural awareness and team performance when teams engaged in a reflexivity intervention to determine if diverse teams would benefit from such an intervention. We analyzed a sample of 62 teams across two consecutive scenarios in a repeated measures design. Our findings provide support for team reflexivity to be a beneficial intervention in the development of cultural awareness and improvement of performance for teams that are diverse. We elaborate on the implications for teams operating remotely (i.e., working together in different locations or times) and for practical applications.
